Solution Type:
None Available

Python is prone to a Regular Expresson Denial of Service (ReDoS) vulnerability.

Detection Method:
Checks if a vulnerable version is present on the target host.

Technical Details:
The AbstractBasicAuthHandler class of the urllib.request module uses an inefficient regular expression (catastrophic backtracking) which can be exploited by an attacker to cause a denial of service.

Successful exploitation would allow an attacker to crash the application.

Affected Versions:
Python 2.7 through 2.7.17, 3.5 through 3.5.9, 3.6 through 3.6.10, 3.7 through 3.7.6, and 3.8 through 3.8.1

No known solution is available as of 17th February, 2020. Information regarding this issue will be updated once solution details are available.
