ImageMagick <= 7.0.8-34 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)

Published: 2019-07-01 15:08:10
CVE Author: NIST National Vulnerability Database

CVSS Base Vector:
AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P

Detection Type:
Executable

Solution Type:
Vendor Patch

Summary:
ImageMagick is prone to multiple vulnerabilities.

Detection Method:
Checks if a vulnerable version is present on the target host.

Technical Details:
Following vulnerabilities exist: - A NULL pointer dereference in the function ReadPANGOImage in coders/pango.c and the function ReadVIDImage in coders/vid.c allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted image. - There is a memory leak vulnerability in the WripteDPXImage function in coders/dpx.c. - There is a memory leak in the ReadPCLImage function in coders/pcl.c. - There is a 'use of uninitialized value' vulnerability in the WriteJP2Image function in coders/jp2.c. - There is a 'use of uninitialized value' vulnerability in the ReadPANGOImage function in coders/pango.c. - There is a 'use of uninitialized value' vulnerability in the SyncImageSettings function in MagickCore/image.c. This is related to AcquireImage in magick/image.c.

Impact:
Successful exploitation would allow an attacker to crash the application, access sensitive information or even execute arbitrary code on the target machine.

Affected Versions:
ImageMagick through version 7.0.8-34.

Recommendations:
Update to version 7.0.8-35.

Vulnerability management is the process in which vulnerabilities in IT are identified and the risks of these vulnerabilities are evaluated. This evaluation leads to correcting the vulnerabilities and removing the risk or a formal risk acceptance by the management of an organization. The term vulnerability management is often confused with vulnerability scanning. Despite the fact both are related, there is an important difference between the two. Vulnerability scanning consists of using a computer program to identify vulnerabilities in networks, computer infrastructure or applications. Vulnerability management is the process surrounding vulnerability scanning, also taking into account other aspects such as risk acceptance, remediation etc. Source: "Implementing a Vulnerability Management Process".
